BIOKINETICIST - STUART MCDADE

Stuart obtained his BA Human Movement Sciences degree from the Rand Afrikaans University in 2004 before completing an honours degree in Sport Science from the University of Johannesburg in 2005. He then further completed his studies with an honours degree in Biokinetics from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2006.

After completing his internship in 2007 at the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology in Johannesburg, as well as the NMMU Biokinetics and High Performance Centre in Port Elizabeth, he travelled to Switzerland and the United Kingdom to pursue his goal of playing top level sport while at the same time working as a biokineticist and sport scientist at various health studios and high performance centres in both Geneva and London between 2008-2010. Stuart McDade Biokineticists was officially opened on 1st August 2010 and currently operates out of the Premier Health Centre in Blairgowrie as well as the Netcare Waterfall City Hospital in Midrand.

In 2011, Stuart accompanied the South African Women’s hockey team as the biokineticist on their tours to Europe in preparation for the 2012 London Olympic Games. His numerous years of experience in the field of biokinetics has also lead him to working with Supersport United Football Club, SA hockey men’s and women’s players, SA ultimate Frisbee squads, elite triathletes and ironmen, numerous Comrades and ultra-marathon runners and professional cyclists. He also has a keen interest in disabled athletes and has worked with various Paralympic competitors over the years, some of whom were gold medalists at various Paralympic Games.

Apart from sports rehabilitation and athlete performance enhancement, Stuart also has a passion for various other forms of rehabilitation including orthopaedics, post-operative rehab, chronic disease management, neurological rehab, children’s biokinetics, lower back rehabilitation and postural correction. He also has a particular interest in knee injuries.

Stuart is a very keen sportsman himself and has represented Gauteng, Eastern Province as well as various national league teams overseas in hockey. He also represented the South African students team in 2006 and is currently a member of the SA masters over 35’s team which finished 5th at the world cup in Barcelona in 2018. Although his primary interest is in ball sports, he has also completed the Two Oceans Ultra-Marathon as well as the 94.7 cycle challenge. Other sporting interests include football, squash, cricket, tennis and rugby.

In 2017, Stuart shifted the focus of his practice towards isokinetic testing and evaluation using very advanced and highly technical equipment which, to this day, is still the leading muscle/joint testing and training equipment around the world. After investing in two of these top of the range machines, the Cybex Humac Norm and the Biodex System 3, he has seen the results of his rehabilitation improve dramatically through the objective and scientific feedback which these assessments can achieve. This has allowed patients to return to activity a lot quicker than the more common subjective testing protocols which are often used but which are not nearly as accurate or effective in achieving results and returning patients to full activity.

Leg Injury

BIOKINETICIST - CJ BARNARD

Physical Therapist

Biokineticists are human movement specialists who prescribe exercise programs either as a preventative measure for injury or illness, or to correct a health issue such as an injury, recovery from a disease, illness, or operation. The 3 main pillars consist of orthopedic rehabilitation (strengthening of muscles to protect joints during sport activities and everyday living, improving range of motion, muscle and joint pain etc.), chronic rehabilitation (cardiovascular, arthritis, diabetes etc. disease management) and wellness (weight loss, lifestyle, and stress management).

CJ completed his studies at the North West University (NWU Pothcefstroom) in 2018. He then completed his internship at the Blue Bulls Company in 2019 where he was fortunate enough to learn a great deal about high performance orthopedic rehab and sports injuries. He also part time worked at Tirsa Pittaway Biokineticist as intern where he saw a wide variety of patients and took in as much knowledge as possible. In 2020 CJ started as an independent practitioner where he lived out his passion and never stopped learning.

He believes that experience and research are two fundamental aspects of his rehab. He wants to keep his rehab evidence based and unique to every individual. Helping people is his passion. He won’t rest until he has done his best!
